Hello!

I conduct a critical design practice that is related and interactive with the city, place, making practices, social and cultural fabric. With an inter-scaled and interdisciplinary approach, I take part in various initiatives and projects for safeguard and support of neighborhoods, local communities and craftsmanship by acting with the understanding of design for sustainability. In my work, I try to put forward alternative, sustainable and participatory visions, models and practices that take their power from the place and communities against urban transformation and gentrification processes that ignore the place and its values. My design practice is shaped more in a social, even activist way. it takes the form of actions that aim to trigger sustainable systemic changes more than creating a physical product. While the early years of my design practice is focused on physical production such as interior design practices, product design and design management, the later years is focused more on my work on sustainability at the neighborhood scale. And then the work in the field of education was added to this.

Since 2006, I initiated the "Made in Şişhane Project" which supports the sustainability of craft neighborhoods in Istanbul and I have carried out many actions and activities (exhibitions, workshops, walks, talks, publications, etc.). The project was a finalist in the City to City Barcelona FAD Award competition titled "Learning Initiatives in The City". In order to establish the relationship between Craft Neighborhoods and Academia, I proposed the "Apprenticeship in Design" studio course at Istanbul Bilgi University, Department of Industrial Design and designed an educational model where students work as "apprentices" in craft workshops and produce craft & design products in 2013.  I give lectures at various universities at the intersection of craft, production, design and sustainability.

I find it important to carry out my work for the long term, on the one hand for systemic changes and sustainability, and on the other hand because of my responsibility towards the neighborhoods and communities I am involved in. Like the Made in Sishane Project, my work within the scope of the Sulukule Platform and its struggle can also be considered within this approach. As one of the founders of the Sulukule Platform, I have worked with the platform members for many years to stop demolition and develop participatory and sustainable practices during the state led urban transformation processes of Sulukule, an old Istanbul and Romany Neighborhood.
